More about Workshops
Which workshop?
No matter what stage you are in your relationship with felt, working with other feltmakers, both tutors and students, is always rewarding. Each workshop is an opportunity to try something new.
If you have never felted before, Heather runs 1:1 sessions in her studio as an introduction to feltmaking prior to attending a scheduled workshop. Armed with your new-found knowledge of how to felt, you will then be ready to enjoy all of the other workshops.
You can also book a workshop for yourself and friends. Please get in touch.
Where are they?
All group workshops take place in St Margaret's House, Edinburgh in Heather's studio 3.03.
How are they run?
Heather's workshops include a full demonstration on techniques for blending wools, using other fibres, laying out the felt, designing templates (where appropriate) and fine finishing. Heather helps you with your design, gives suggestions on the use of colour and advice on technique. She will encourage you to experiment and take risks.
What do I need?
Although most equipment and materials are provided, there are one or two essentials that you need to have with you, so please check the 'What to bring' section for each workshop.
You are always welcome to bring along any fibres to experiment with, fluffy knitting yarns such as mohair and Lopi roving are particularly good. If you have any perished silk scarves or hankies, they can be used to great effect to create texture and interest.
Throughout the workshops, there will be tea, coffee and biscuits available. Please provide your own lunch.
Most important of all, please remember to bring a notebook and pen for taking notes during the demonstration.
What happens if I don't finish my project?
Heather aims to finish the workshops by 4.30. However, if it is obvious that another half hour or so is needed to give everyone time to complete their work, then that's fine. Some projects can take longer than others, and no one likes going home with unfinished pieces, especially after investing so much time, imagination and hard work into their creation.
With that in mind, it's always best not to have any urgent appointments to go to directly after a workshop.
